The average ticket size of each retail folio has increased 20%, from Rs63,200 to Rs75,801 in FY 2016-17, shows the latest AMFI data.
As on March 2017, the mutual fund industry has 5.5 crore folios. Of these, individual investors – both retail investors and HNIs – hold 99%. While retail investors constitute 95% of folios in the mutual funds industry with over 5.2 crore folios, HNIs hold close to 25.12 lakh folios with average ticket size of Rs19 lakh. An investment of Rs5 lakh or more places an individual in the high net worth category and below Rs5 lakh in retail.
Overall, the mutual fund industry has witnessed a growth of 20% in its folio count. The total folio count in mutual funds has increased from 4.58 crore in March 2016 to 5.5 crore in March 2017.
Experts attribute the growth in folio count to the rise in folios of equity-oriented funds, which include equity and balance funds. Nearly 80% of the folios are in equity schemes. The average ticket size of each equity folio increased by 17%, to Rs1.42 lakh as on March 2017. In March 2016, the average ticket size of equity folio was Rs1.21 lakh.
Similarly, debt funds account for 17% of folio count. Individual investors hold 98% per cent of debt fund folios. The average ticket size of debt funds increased 9%, to Rs8.25 lakh in FY 2016-17.
In the debt fund category, liquid funds account for only 1.5% of overall folio count of the industry. However, the average ticket size of this category is the highest compared to other categories with Rs40 lakh per folio due to presence of institutional investors.
Overall, institutional investors, including FIIs, have the largest ticket size in mutual fund folio count with over Rs11 crore per folio. Corporates follow with an average ticket size of Rs1.40 crore per folio. In FY 2015-2016, corporates had the largest ticket size in mutual fund folio count with over Rs14 crore per folio followed by institutional investors, including FIIs, with an average ticket size of Rs10 crore per folio.
