Indian equity markets have been witnessing heightened volatility due to a number of domestic and global factors. The average NSE VIX or the volatility index has jumped 17.34 this year compared to 15.07 in 2018. More than 71% of the stocks of companies with market-cap greater than Rs 500 crore lost money in the past year and over 75% of the stocks in the same universe have underperformed the BSE Sensex between 25 July 2018 and 25 July 2019.
