The AIF industry grew by 42% in FY 2022 to reach an AUM (known as commitments raised in AIF parlance) of Rs. 6.40 lakh crore from Rs. 4.50 lakh crore, shows latest SEBI data.
Category II funds accounted for the majority of the commitments at Rs. 5.20 lakh crore at the end of March 2022. The amount is 46% higher than the March 2021 figure of Rs. 3.60 lakh crore.
Category II funds include real estate funds, private equity funds and funds for distressed assets. These funds offer exposure to assets in which traditional mutual fund schemes cannot invest.

Category I and Category III funds accounted for the rest of the commitments. As of March-end, while Category I had an AUM of Rs. 53,000 crore, Category III AIFs were managing Rs. 69,000.
Category I funds invest in start-ups or early stage ventures, social ventures, SMEs or infrastructure funds. Category III AIFs include long short funds, long only funds and hedge funds.
