    Here is how you can ‘Excel’ your advisory business

    The article lists out some of the commonly used Excel functions in financial advisory.

    Excel is undoubtedly one of the best softwares in the world. No matter how complicated the calculation, a good hold on Excel will help you simplify it and consequently increase your productivity. Hence, for financial advisors particularly, it is of paramount importance to have a good command of Excel.

    The objective of this article is to serve as an introduction or refresher to some of the common functions of Excel that financial advisors should know. This also includes common formulas and keyboard shortcuts to use it more efficiently.

    Shortcuts Starting with CTRL

    CTRL+A

    Select all contents of a worksheet.

     

    Repeats the last entry.

    CTRL+B

    Bold all cells in the highlighted section.

    CTRL+Y

    For selecting the whole Column

    CTRL+D

    Fill Content of the selected cell on top to bottom. CTRL + D (i.e. Ctrl+ Down)

    CTRL+Z

    Undo the last action

    CTRL+F

    Search current sheet.

    CTRL+1

    Changes the format of the selected cells.

    CTRL+G

    Go to a certain area.

    CTRL+2

    Bolds all cells in the highlighted section

    CTRL+H

    Find and replace.

    CTRL+3

    Puts italics all cells in the highlighted section.

    CTRL+I

    Puts italics on all cells in the highlighted section.

    CTRL+4

    Underlines all cells in highlighted section.

    CTRL+K

    Inserts a hyperlink.

    CTRL+5

    Puts a strikethrough all cells in the highlighted section.

    CTRL+S

    Saves the open worksheet

    CTRL+6

    Shows or hides objects.

    CTRL+R

    Fill Right

    CTRL+7

    Shows or hides the toolbar.

    CTRL+U

    Underlines all cells in the highlighted section.

    CTRL+8

    Toggles the outline symbols.

    CTRL+V

    Pastes everything copied onto the clipboard.

    CTRL+9

    Hides rows.

    CTRL+W

    Closes the current workbook.

    CTRL+0

    Hides columns.

    CTRL+X

    Cuts all cells within the highlighted section.

    Ctrl+Shift+:

    Enters the current time.

    CTRL+P

    Print the current sheet.

    Ctrl+;

    Enters the current date.

    Ctrl+Shift+”

    Copies value from cell above.

    Ctrl+’

    Copies a formula from the cell above.

    Ctrl+Shift+=

    Inserts a new column or row.

    Ctrl+Shift+#

    Applies date formatting.

     

    Ctrl+Shift+~

    Switches between showing Excel formulas or their values in cells.

     

    Ctrl+Shift+^

     

    Applies exponential formatting.

    Ctrl+Shift+@

    Applies time formatting.

    Ctrl+Shift+*

    Selects the current region around the active cell.

    Ctrl+Shift+!

    Applies comma formatting.

    Ctrl+Shift+&

    Places border around selected cells.

     

    Ctrl+Shift+%

    Applies percentage formatting.

    Ctrl+Shift+(

    Unhide rows.

     

    Ctrl+[

    Selects all cells referenced by formulas in the highlighted section.

     

    Ctrl+Shift+)

     

    Unhide columns.

     

    Ctrl+]

    Selects cells that contain formulas that reference the active cell.

    Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar

     

    Ctrl+Home

    Move to cell A1.

    Ctrl+End

    Move to last cell on worksheet.

    Ctrl++

    Insert

    Ctrl+-

    Delete.

    Shortcuts Starting with SHIFT

    Shortcuts Starting with ALT & Function Keys

    Shift+Insert

    Pastes what is stored on the clipboard.

    Alt+F1

    Inserts a chart.

    Shift+Page Up

    In a single column, highlights all cells above that which are selected.

    Alt+F2

    Save as

    Shift+Page

    Down

    In a single column, highlights all cells above that which are

    selected.

    Alt+F4

    Exits Excel.

    Shift+Home

    Highlights all text to the left of the cursor.

    Alt+F8

    Opens the macro dialog box.

    Shift+End

    Highlights all text to the right of the cursor.

    Alt+F11

    Opens the Visual Basic editor.

    Shift+Up Arrow

    Extends the highlighted area up one cell.

    Alt+Shift+F1

    Creates a new worksheet.

    Shift+Down Arrow

    Extends the highlighted area down one cell.

    Alt+Shift+F2

    Saves the current worksheet.

    Shift+Left Arrow

    Extends the highlighted area left one character.

    F1

    Opens the Help menu

    Shift +Right Arrow

    Extends the highlighted area right one character.

    F2

    Edits the selected cell.

    Shift+F2

    Allows the user to edit a cell comment.

    F3

    After a name has been created, F3 will paste names

    Shift+F3

    Opens the Excel formula window

    F7

    Spell check selected text or document.

    Shift+F5

    Brings up a search box.

    F8

    Enters Extend Mode.

    Shift+F6

    Move to previous pane.

    F9

    Recalculates every workbook

    Shift+F8

    Add to selection

    F10

    Activates the menu bar

    Shift+F9

    Performs calculate function on active sheet.

    F11

    Creates a chart from selected data.
