Despite a correction of over 2,000 points in Sensex in August, investors continued to pour money in equity funds. The latest SEBI data shows that equity funds added over 5 lakh folios in August. A rough calculation shows that the industry has added over 24,600 folios each day in August.
The total folio count of equity funds went up from 3.29 crore in July to 3.34 crore in August even though the BSE Sensex fell 7% during the same period. In fact, it fell by over 1600 points or 6% in a single day on 24 August, giving investors an opportunity to enter.
The addition in folios in August was due to healthy inflows in equity funds. The industry received net inflows of over Rs. 9,000 crore in equity funds (including ELSS) in August. More significantly, majority of the inflows came in existing funds. Existing funds received gross inflows of Rs. 14,800 crore while NFOs collected Rs. 1,060 crore. As a result, the equity AUM of the industry touched Rs. 3.83 lakh crore in August.
Balanced Funds
Balanced funds added 48,000 folios due to inflows in a few balanced schemes. AMFI data shows that the industry has collected close to Rs.1,800 crore from 26 schemes in August. The total folios in balanced funds increased from 21.29 lakh in July to 21.77 lakh in August.
Debt
Debt funds have also seen good traction as the total folio count in this category increased by 96,000 in August, largely due to addition in income fund folios. AMFI data shows that income funds received net inflows of Rs. 12,700 crore in August.
Barring ETFs and fund of funds investing overseas, all other categories recorded a growth in folios. Overseas fund of funds lost 1,800 folios in August. This category is continuously losing folios over the last few months.
Overall, reflecting the positive sentiment among investors, the industry has added over 6.55 lakh folios in August. The total folio count across all categories increased to 4.38 crore in July from 4.32 crore in July.
