    Equity funds add close to 2.50 lakh new folios in June

    The total folio count across all categories increased to 4.89 crore in June 2016 from 4.84 crore in May 2016.

    Thanks to fresh inflows in existing funds on the back of a rally in equity markets, equity funds continued to add new folios in June. Existing funds received gross inflows of Rs. 13,163 core in June, shows AMFI data. The BSE Sensex was up 1% in June.   

    As a result, equity funds added 2.10 lakh folios in May, shows the latest SEBI data. ELSS funds too received net inflows of Rs. 365 crore in June which helped the category add 39,557 folios.

    Balanced funds

    Balanced funds continued to gain popularity among investors as the category saw an addition of close to 55,943 folios in June and received healthy net inflows of Rs. 2,402 crore. After the changes in tax structure of debt funds, many investors have rushed to balanced funds. The total folios in balanced funds increased from 25.66 lakh in May 2016 to 26.22 lakh in June.

    Debt funds

    Debt funds have also seen good traction as the total folio count in this category increased by 1.76 lakh in June, largely due to addition in income funds. Income funds added over 1.11 lakh folios in June. The total folio count in debt funds increased from 86.70 lakh in May 2016 to 88.47 lakh in June 2016. Similarly, liquid funds too added 65,652 folios in June. However, gilt funds lost 94 folios in June.

     

    ETFs

    ETFs, which track the equity indices, are getting increasingly popular among investors. The folio count in this category has risen to 2.76 lakh in June 2016. Gold ETFs lost over 7,000 folios in June. Experts attribute this drop in folios to profit booking on account of the recent increase in gold prices.

     

    Overseas fund of Funds
    This category is seeing continuous erosion in folios. However, the pace of folio closures has slowed down in June. The category lost 6,000 folios in May. In June, this category lost 1,341 folios.

    Overall, reflecting the positive sentiment among investors, the industry added 4.76 lakh folios in June. Thus, the total folio count across all categories increased to 4.89 crore in June 2016 from 4.84 crore in May 2016.
