HDFC & Axis see highest folio growth in FY12

HDFC adds more than 4.8 lakh folios while Axis adds close to 1 lakh folio in FY12 at a time when the industry saw a dip in their investor base.

India’s largest fund house by assets, HDFC added more than 4.8 lakh new folios to its kitty in FY12. It has close to 51.6 lakh folios as on March 2012, compared to 46.80 lakh folios in March 2011. HDFC has seen folio additions in non-SIP equity funds and in the retail debt category.  Its AUM went up to Rs. 89,879 crore as on March 2012 from Rs. 86,282 crore in March 2011.

After HDFC, Axis AMC added the maximum number of folios – close to 1 lakh. It had 3.10 lakh folios in March 2011 which went up to 4.06 lakh folios in March 2012. Axis launched 6 new funds in FY12.

Among the top 10 AMCs, ICICI added more than 28,000 new folios. It has 28.37 lakh folios as on March 2012.  Last year it had 28.08 lakh folios.  Out of the 15 top AMCs analysed by us, 9 AMCs registered a dip in their folios. The folio data of 2 AMC’s were not available yet.

“Folio additions have been nullified by redemptions across the industry,” says a senior official from a leading fund house.

UTI had the largest investor base at 98.88 lakh folios last year. Reliance AMC holds the second largest number of folios at 71 lakh as on March 2012.

Industry officials attribute redemption from SIPs and folio consolidation as the two main reasons for drop in folios. The MF industry has lost close to 8 lakh folios in the last one year.
