13% distributors earn more than Rs.20 lakh annually

Over 4,300 distributors earn gross commission of over Rs.20 lakh in a year.
    Nishant Patnaik Mar 7, 2019

Of the 33,150 active distributors (defined as those having a minimum AUM of at least Rs.1 crore) can 13% or 4300 of them earn gross commission of more than Rs.20 lakh annually, shows an analysis of the latest distributor AUM.

These distributors manage assets in excess of Rs.25 crore. We have taken trial commission of 0.80% to arrive at the gross commission earned by distributors.  However, the actual number may go up as the data covers AUA 95% of the total industry AUM.

That means, 87% or 28,850 distributors earn less than Rs.20 lakh annually and are eligible to get relief under the government’s move to defer the implementation of reverse charge mechanism (RCM) under GST norms.

The data shows that another 4,384 distributors earn between Rs.10 and Rs.20 lakh annually. These distributors manage AUA between Rs.12.5 crore and Rs.25 crore.

However, a majority of distributors i.e. 22,116 or 67% distributors earn between Rs.1 lakh and Rs.10 lakh a year.

The rest of 2,350 distributors earn between Rs.80,000 and Rs.1 lakh annually.

Overall, 87000 distributors manage assets in excess of Rs.1 lakh.

If 67% of IFAs are earning less than Rs 10 lakhs at a gross level, then regulators need to clearly understand that this advertising about 'upar ki kamai' is quite simply, nonsense. It's also common sense that in years of market downs, these earnings will reduce to lower, possibly subsistence levels. But not just them, critics will also continue with this perception because it suits them.

Being a distributor, I would say our lives are most difficult. The industry need to come forward to give group insurance and group health policy free.

What is wrong about it.I am no more using my broker code helping invest directly and taking a fee for it.

Do you charge fixed fee or percentage of AUM?
Deepak Patil · 5 years ago
Dear Mr Singh,You may have to evolve your own model in charging your customer.
It could be slab wise or a fixed fee + certain percentage of the amount invested.
What you will have to bear in mind is :how to ask for a % of the total investment when you register a SIP for 5 years?
To initiate a client in the direct mode will have its own hazards depending on how you service the client. You will understand these nuances when you are in this business for long.Evolving your own model will then be easy.
In spite of what the regulators do (and results in shrinkage of commissions),I cannot see a more rosy line of business than this one.No jokes.

Please stop misleading with your flawed articles. The basic premise of taking the tail commission @.80% is wrong. On majority of our historical AUM the average trail is coming out less than .40%. In earlier regime AMCs used to apy .50% trail and after TER rationalization the same has been reduced to .35%. And if .40% has been reduced to .30 to .25%.

So your article has basic flaws.
