Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh love equity funds

In absolute terms, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh registered highest rise in equity AUM last fiscal.
Sridhar Kumar Sahu Apr 16, 2019

Equity funds are getting popular in small states. Equity AUM of Tripura, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh recorded a sharp rise last fiscal. In percentage terms, these three states recorded the highest growth in their equity AUM over the last one year.

Equity AUM in Tripura increased over 40% in the last one year while Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh clocked an increase of around 30%.

Equity AUM includes growth options of equity funds, ELSS and balanced funds.

Experts attribute this to increasing awareness about mutual funds as a result of the ‘Mutual Fund Sahi Hai’ campaign and rising popularity of SIPs.

In absolute terms, Maharashtra continues to dominate the MF industry through its equity AUM. Karnataka and surprisingly Uttar Pradesh followed Maharashtra in the second and third spot, respectively. Uttar Pradesh has overtaken states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Maharashtra’s equity AUM increased to over Rs.23,000 crore while that of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh were over Rs.12,000 crore and Rs.10,000 crore, respectively.

Overall, if we include debt AUM i.e. total assets, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh recorded the highest growth in percentage terms.

Similarly, in absolute terms, Maharashtra recorded the highest increase in its average AUM last fiscal. Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal followed Maharashtra, in that order. New Delhi, which had the second highest average AUM in FY 2017-18, missed the top five list in FY 2018-19.

However, Tripura, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Daman and Diu saw a drop in their average AUM over the last one year. Tripura, which has seen the highest on-year increase in its equity AUM, witnessed an overall decline in assets due to redemption from debt funds.
