Mumbai is home to India’s top wealth creators; as many as 217 (26%) of individuals in the list of 828 Indian billionaires are from Mumbai, shows IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2020. Besides, Mumbai is also the preferred city of residence for the top 100 billionaires.
New Delhi and Bengaluru follow Mumbai with 128 and 67 billionaires, respectively.
With 58 new entrants and 17 dropouts, Mumbai registered a net increase of 41 individuals and for the first time, New Delhi registered a net loss of 5 with 17 new additions and 21 dropouts, shows the report.
With 248 and 128 entrants, respectively, Maharashtra and Delhi are the preferred states of residence for billionaires. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were among the top 5 states having billionaire population of 72, 65 and 60, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand (4), Bihar (4), Andhra Pradesh (7) and Punjab (8) are home to the least number of India’s wealth creators.
“Over half of the new additions in the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2020 are contributed by the top three cities this year - a spike from the 36% last year. The fact that the list features entrepreneurs from 111 cities is evidence for the length and breadth of India’s wealth creation story”, said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India.
