Everyone is born with a purpose. And if we can identify our purpose of life, we can achieve success in our professional and personal lives.

The latest episode of Lessons from the Masters hosted Rajiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director, Bajaj Capital who in conversation with K.S. Rao, Head - Investor Education & Distribution Development, Aditya Birla Sun Life MF threw light on finding the purpose of life through Japanese philosophy – Ikigai. Rajiv is a veteran in the financial industry and also an Ikigai Coach.

Rajiv shared tips on making life more purposeful and beautifully explained some key questions that we usually have in our minds.

    What is meant by Ikigai?

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy that means ‘purpose of life’. It is a union of what you love, what are you good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for.

Rajiv said that when passion meets profession, people become successful and make money.

    What is my unique talent?

There is a unique talent in each one of us. Being mindful of compliments received may help you discover the unique gift you possess.

You may have not realised earlier but they could be a certain compliment that you might be receiving frequently. It could be something that your teachers praised you for in the past or what your friends, colleagues or critics say. Giving serious thought to these can take you closer to discovering your unique gift. For example, a compliment of being able to derive sense out of numbers hints at your good analytical abilities.

How can I discover my Ikigai?

Make it a point to spend some time with yourself daily. Write down your answers to what I love, what am I good at, what the world needs and what I can be paid for.

If you come across a topic where you become fully immersed and emotionally attached, these are signs that you are getting closer to discovering your Ikigai.

Till you find your purpose, find purpose in what you are doing.

Three key learnings from the session:

    • Ikigai shares the key to longevity. MFDs should take into account longer life expectancy for planning finances of their clients. They should ensure that their clients enjoy financial independence after their retirement
    • Practice the Japanese art of Omotenashi to deliver exceptional client experience. MFDs should get into the shoes of their clients to understand their needs and requirements
    • Over time, technology has become more affordable. It is imperative to digitalise business models while retaining the human touch
