The MF industry ended last month on a positive note. While the average AUM increased by 13% to reach Rs. 37.22 lakh crore, it added many new investors and folios in May 2022.
Here are some key highlights of the MF Industry in May 2022.
- Over 6 lakh new investors start investing in mutual funds
Investor count increased by 2% or 6.08 lakh, taking the total number to 3.49 crore. This includes 3.44 crore unique PANs and close to 5 lakh unique PEKRNs (PAN-exempt KYC reference numbers).
- More than 20 lakh folios registered
The folio count increased by 2% from 13.13 crore as on Apr 2022 to 13.33 crore as on May 2022. Of the total folios, 56% or 7.49 crore were registered in T-30 cities, and the remaining 44% or 5.84 crore were registered in B-30 cities.
- T30 assets and B30 assets slightly dip to Rs. 30.58 lakh crore and Rs. 6.64 lakh crore, respectively
As against Apr 2022, T-30 AUM slightly declined from Rs.31.24 lakh crore to Rs.30.58 lakh crore. B30 AUM also declined from Rs. 6.80 lakh crore to Rs. 6.64 lakh crore. In terms of proportionate share, T-30 and B-30 cities formed 82% (Rs. 30.58 lakh crore) and 18% (Rs. 6.64 lakh crore) of the overall industry AUM.
- Retail investors’ average AUM per folio declined marginally to Rs. 1.59 lakh
The average AUM per folio of the industry as a whole (retail and corporate) reduced marginally from Rs. 2.90 lakh as on Apr 2022 to Rs. 2.79 lakh as on May 2022. The combined average AUM per folio for T-30 and B-30 investors also declined from Rs. 1.65 lakh to Rs. 1.59 lakh.
Geography-wise, the retail average AUM per folio was about Rs. 2.11 lakh and Rs. 92,000 in T-30 and B-30 cities, respectively.
- 19.75 lakh new SIPs and 10.36 lakh matured/paused/discontinued SIPs
Investors registered 19.75 lakh SIPs in May 2022 whereas, 10.36 lakh SIP accounts have matured/have been paused or discontinued. The total live SIP count increased from 5.39 crore as on Apr 2022 to 5.48 crore as on May 2022. Of these accounts, equity schemes constituted about 85% and debt and hybrid schemes formed 8%.
- Investors continue to seek comfort in MFDs
Of the total Rs. 12,286 crore monthly SIP investments, regular plans contributed 77% or Rs. 9,429 crore and direct plans contributed the balance of 23% or Rs. 2,857 crore.
- 3,367 MFDs join the mutual fund industry and 6,213 MFDs renew their ARN
3,367 MFDs joined the MF industry in May 2022 which is lower than 3,991 registrations in Apr 2022.
May 2022 registrations included 1,648 individuals, 89 corporates, 1,628 corporate employees and 2 individual MFD employees. State-wise details show Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh report over 40% of the total ARN/EUIN registration. They individually contribute 25.04%, 11.82% and 7.63%.
6,213 MFDs (3,315 individuals, 176 corporates and 2,722 corporate employees) renewed their ARNs in May 2022, which is higher than 5,605 renewals in Apr 2022.
