    MF bulletin: The MF industry gets 3.48 lakh new investors

    The industry adds 13.13 lakh new folios in June 2022.

    June 2022 was good for the MF industry.

    While the MF industry saw its Average AUM decline marginally by 1% to reach Rs. 37 lakh crore, it added close to 3.50 lakh new investors in June 2022.

    Here are the key highlights of the month gone by.

    Investor count

    Close to 3.50 lakh investors joined the MF industry in June 2022 taking the investor count to 3.53 crore. The total investor count comprises 3.48 crore unique PANs and close to 5 lakh unique PEKRNs (PAN-exempt KYC reference numbers).

    Folio number

    Investors opened 13.13 lakh new folios in the last month. As a result, the aggregate folio count of the industry stood at 13.47 crore. Of these, 56% or 7.57 crore folios were from T-30 cities.

    T30 and B30 assets

    In terms of AUM as on June 30, 2022, T-30 assets dipped from Rs.30.58 lakh crore to Rs. 29.27 lakh crore in June 2022. B30 assets also declined from Rs. 6.64 lakh crore to Rs. 6.37 lakh crore. Of the total industry AUM of Rs. 35.64 lakh crore as on Jun 2022, T-30 and B-30 cities formed 82% and 18%, respectively.

    Average ticket size

    The industry average ticket size (retail and corporate) was Rs. 2.65 lakh as on June 2022 as against Rs. 2.79 lakh as on May 2022. The combined average ticket size (T-30 and B-30 retail investors) also declined from Rs. 1.59 lakh to Rs. 1.53 lakh.

    Location-wise, the retail average ticket size was about Rs. 2.03 lakh and Rs.89,000 in T-30 and B-30 cities respectively. 

    SIP accounts 

    While investors registered 17.93 lakh SIPs in June 2022, 11.45 lakh SIP accounts matured/were paused or discounted. The total live SIP count increased from 5.48 crore as on May 2022 to 5.55 crore as on June 2022.  

    Of the total live SIP count (5.55 crore), equity schemes (4.71 crore), debt schemes (18.64 lakh) and hybrid schemes (33.46 lakh) formed about 85%, 3% and 6% respectively.

    Regular Vs direct plans   

    Investors prefer MFDs over direct plans. MFDs brought Rs. 9,457 crore or 77% of the total monthly SIP amount of Rs 12,276 crore. Direct plans contributed the remaining 23% or Rs. 2,819 crore.

    ARN/EUIN registration and renewal

    As on June 2022, the MF industry had 2.05 lakh ARN/EUIN holders. Of these 57% or 117,058 are from T-30 cities and the remaining 43% or 88,004 are from B-30 cities.

    With regard to new entrants, 3,559 MFDs joined the MF industry in June 2022. These included 1,803 individuals, 1 overseas distributor, 125 corporates, 1,629 corporate employees and 1 individual MFD employee. State-wise details show Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh collectively account for over 40% of the total ARN/EUIN registrations. They individually contribute 22.17%, 12.05% and 9.27% respectively.  

    In terms of renewals, 6,212 MFDs (3,693 individuals, 1 new cadre, 201 corporates, 2,314 corporate employees and 3 individual MFD employees) renewed their ARNs in June 2022.
