The number of mutual fund distributors with over Rs. 250 crore equity AUM doubled in FY 2022 as the industry added a record number of new investors and the market posted strong growth.

As per IDFC MF's latest MF trends report, there were 172 MFDs with equity AUM of over Rs. 250 crore at the end of FY 2022 compared to 83 a year ago. The equity AUM managed by these MFDs has risen 120% in a year to Rs. 84,500 crore.

Similarly, the count of MFDs with over Rs. 100 crore AUM is up 81%. The figure has grown from 447 at the end of FY 2021 to 809 at the end of FY 2022.

The data excludes banks, corporate distributors, fintechs, RIAs, national distributors and other direct platforms.

Please note that the report is based on MFDex data by CAMS and captures only around 90% of the industry data.

The report has another interesting insight — 61% of the total equity AUM of MFDs is with the top 11,300 MFDs. These top MFDs are those who have an equity AUM of more than Rs. 10 crore.

Overall (including both equity and debt), there were 1,245 MFDs with AUM in excess of Rs. 100 crore at the end of FY 2022. The number was up 41% in a year. The AUM managed by these MFDs was 45% more than in FY 2021 at Rs. 3.6 lakh crore.
