    Momentum in SIPs continue, monthly flows reached close to Rs. 14,000 crore

    From 5100 new ARN registrations to an average AUM of Rs. 41 lakh crore, here are the key trends that shaped the MF industry in January 2023.

    Investors continued to place their trust in mutual funds as seen in the monthly SIP flows of Rs. 13,856 crore last month. Of this, regular plans/MFDs brought 77% and direct plans contributed 23%.  Notably, this is the fourth consecutive time that monthly flows exceeded Rs. 13,000 crore.

    Also, with an annual growth of 5%, the average AUM stood at Rs. 40.80 lakh crore. 

    Read on to know the other key trends that the MF industry reported in January 2023. 

    New investor count 

    The new investor count increased from 3.67 crore in December 2022 to 3.70 crore in the last month, an increase of 3.41 lakh. 

    The count of unique PANs and PEKRNs (PAN-exempt KYC reference numbers) stood at 3.66 crore and close to 5 lakh, respectively. 

    Total folio count 

    With an addition of 17.24 lakh folios, the total folio count increased from 14.11 crore folios in December 2022 to 14.28 crore in January 2023. 

    Of these, T-30 and B-30 cities contributed 56% (8.04 crore) and 44% (6.24 crore), respectively.  

    Share of T-30 and B-30 cities  

    Of the total AUM, the percentage share of T-30 and B-30 cities remained constant at 82% and 18%, respectively. 

    However, their absolute contribution declined. 

    The contribution of T-30 cities declined from Rs. 32.74 lakh crore to 32.51 lakh crore. Likewise, the share of B-30 cities went down from Rs. 7.15 lakh crore to Rs. 7.11 lakh crore.

    Average AUM per folio

    The average AUM per retail folio stood at Rs. 2.18 lakh and Rs. 0.94 lakh in T-30 and B-30 cities, respectively. The combined ticket size was Rs. 1.64 lakh. 

     

    Net SIP accounts   

    The total number of outstanding SIP accounts increased from 6.12 crore to 6.22 crore, an increase of 9.2 lakh. While the industry reported 22.65 lakh new SIPs, 13.45 lakh SIPs matured/were paused or discontinued.

    ARN registration and renewal 

     

    5,091 MFDs joined the industry of which 2,589 were individuals. This is for the second consecutive month where the new ARN registration count exceeded 5,000.

    In terms of renewals, 3,959 MFDs renewed their ARNs. Of these, 2,006 were individual MFDs.
