Advisors recount the most memorable advice they got from their father which helped them succeed in their lives.
To mark the occasion of Father’s Day, Cafemutual asked leading advisors to share the most important advice from their father that shaped their careers.
Hemant Rustagi, Wiseinvest Advisors
After finishing my studies I got a job offer from UTI Mutual Fund. I was posted in Mumbai. Since my family was based in Delhi, I was not keen on leaving them and coming to Mumbai. My father R. D. Rustagi used to work in Ministry of Finance. I asked my father to get me a posting in Delhi. My father insisted that I go to Mumbai and stay independently. He wanted me to get out of my comfort zone. Staying independently in a city like Mumbai taught me a lot. This was one of the most important lessons taught by my dad which immensely helped me.
The second most important advice I got from my father was saving for a rainy day. Right from the days of my childhood when I got pocket money he persuaded me to save for the future. Today I’m propagating the same thing to people as an Investment Advisor!
Nikhil Kothari, Etica Wealth Management
My father Radheshyam Kothari taught me to take risks in life. He first started dealing in garments. It didn’t work. He then ventured into hardware business which did well. Despite the many ups and downs in his life, he did not give up so easily. That is what inspired us to start our advisory firm. My brothers Gajendra and Virendra and I quit our jobs to start this business. The risk has paid off!
My father is a people’s person. He is very articulate, likes to meet new people and network. You learn something new from every new person you meet. This is also relevant in our business.
Shifali Satsangee, Funds Vedaa
My father Late. H.K Ummatt was a businessman. I imbibed two values from his style of working - organizational skills (to-do lists, reminders, pre-meeting preparations), which help maintain a work life balance so that we have time for everything.
We should adapt to any environment. And have dignity of labour.
Vinod Jain, Jain Investments
The most important advice my father Satechand Jain gave me is to have a lifestyle which you can afford. Don't leverage. These words stuck me when I was buying my car and a new apartment. I didn't buy a luxurious car. I bought a 2BHK apartment instead of 3 BHK apartment. Nobody can take it away from me and I can afford to maintain them for my lifetime.
He says that 'your net worth is your network'. He always taught me to have emphatic relationship with people. Having emphatic relationship with people has helped me in my life.
Lovaii Navlakhi, International Money Matters
The first thing that I have learnt from my father Anees Navlakhi is honesty. I remember that when I was 10 years old, we went to a restaurant at Mussoorie. Surprisingly, a waiter bought a bill which was much lower than what we had to pay. My father called the waiter again and told him that he had given us a wrong bill. The waiter and restaurant owner thanked my dad. He taught me that the honesty is the best policy.
Secondly, my father taught me to keep calm under any circumstances. He strongly believes that time resolves all issues.
Dilshad Billimoria, Dilzer Consultants
My father D N Billimoria always taught me to be independent, stand on my feet and earn a living by working hard. I cannot emphasize how important this is for anyone, especially women. He always used to say this when I was a kid. "Standing at the football ground, gazing at the sky. How can you rise high if you never try.”
The satisfaction of giving my best made it worthwhile. Always! I'm happy for what I am today and for his words of wisdom.
