AMFI data shows that individual investors like retail investors and HNIs account for 62% of the total MF assets.
Of the total AUM of Rs.68 lakh crore, individual AUM stood at Rs.42.10 lakh crore in September 2024.
The data shows that the proportion of individual investors in MF assets increased from 59% in September 2023 to 62% in September 2024. However, its terms of value, the AUM of individual MF assets grew by 50% from Rs. 28.10 lakh crore in September 2023 to Rs. 42.10 lakh crore in September 2024.
Further, it shows that individual investors dominate equity schemes with 88% of equity assets coming from retail investors and HNIs.
Overall, equity schemes make up 61% of the MF industry assets while debt schemes constitute 14% of the assets.
Agra MFD Shifali Satsangee of Funds Vedaa attributes the participation of retail investors in equity schemes to superlative returns provided by the market in the last 2-3 years. She also believes that awareness campaigns by AMFI has increased the knowledge and confidence of investors.
Pune MFD Balvir Chawla of Finnovators Services feels a combination of fresh inflows and mark-to-market gain contributed to this growth. When it comes to increase in equity investment among individual investors, he said that the popularity of SIPs and shift from physical assets to financial assets played a key role in shaping up this trend.
