Investor appetite for equity funds continued to be good in July which was evident in the sustained rise in folios. The latest SEBI data shows that equity funds added 2.78 lakh folios in July. As a result, the total folio count of equity funds went up from 3.26 crore in June to 3.29 crore in July. The BSE Sensex was up 1% in July.
The growth in equity folio count was due to healthy inflows in existing equity schemes which saw net inflows of over Rs. 5,750 crore (including ELSS). Also, the total equity AUM went up to Rs. 3.93 lakh crore in July, up 6% from Rs. 3.72 lakh crore in June.
Balanced Funds
Balanced funds added 36,400 folios as the total folios in this category increased from 20.92 lakh in June to 21.29 lakh in July. Mirae Asset Prudence Fund’s NFO (a balanced fund) which closed in July mopped up Rs. 135 crore.
Debt
Debt funds have also seen good traction as the total folio count in this category increased by 81,100 in July, largely due to addition in liquid fund folios. AMFI data shows that liquid funds received net inflows of Rs. 89,825 crore in July while income funds received inflows of Rs. 21,600 crore.
Barring ETFs and fund of funds investing overseas, all other categories recorded a growth in folios. Overseas fund of funds lost 2,300 folios in July. This category has been continuously losing folios over the last few months.
Overall, reflecting the positive sentiment among investors, the industry has added over 3.90 lakh folios in July. The total folio count across all categories increased to 4.31 crore in July from 4.28 crore in June.
