The existing health insurance policy will cover any hospitalization charges of ill effects caused due to covid-19 vaccine, said IRDAI.

According to several media reports, a few months back healthcare workers had approached health insurers seeking clarification on their existing health policy coverage for covid-19 vaccine’s adverse reactions.

However, the coverage would be subject to terms and conditions of the health insurance policy.

“There have been press reports raising doubts whether any adverse reactions to Covid-19 vaccination that require hospitalization will be covered by the health insurance policies. It is clarified that in the unlikely event of hospitalization following adverse reaction to covid-19 vaccination, hospitalization is covered under the health insurance policies subject to the specific terms and conditions of the policy,” said IRDAI.

Currently, the country is vaccinating people with either Serum Institute of India’s Covishield or Bharat Biotech's Covaxin. The vaccine has been initiated for frontline health workers, senior citizens above 60 years of age and individuals between 45 and 59 years with comorbidities.
