    SBI, Nippon, UTI are the top passive players

    Passive funds make up 16% of the total mutual fund industry AUM.

    A Cafemutual analysis shows that SBI MF, Nippon India MF and UTI MF are the three fund houses in terms of passives AUM.

    Overall, the MF industry has passive AUM of Rs. 11.29 lakh crore or 16.29% of the overall MF industry AUM in December 2024.

    SBI MF commands the highest AUM of Rs.3.66 lakh crore in passive funds. The house derives 33% of its total AUM from passive funds, which include index funds, ETFs, and Fund of Funds.

    Nippon India MF and UTI MF occupy the second and third positions with passive AUM of Rs. 1.67 lakh crore and Rs. 1.49 lakh crore, respectively. While Nippon India MF derives 29% of its total AUM from passives, these funds account for 42% of the total AUM for UTI MF.

    ICICI Prudential MF and Edelweiss MF the next two fund houses with passive AUM of Rs. 1.23 lakh crore and Rs. 77,955 crore, respectively.

    Other fund houses in the top 10 list include HDFC MF, Kotak MF, Aditya Birla Sun Life MF, Motilal Oswal MF, and Bandhan MF.

    In terms of proportion of the passive assets to the total AUM, Zerodha MF derives 100% of its AUM from passive funds. Not so far is Navi MF with 88% of its total AUM coming from passive funds.

    Other significant funds houses with a healthy proportion of passive assets are Edelweiss MF and UTI MF.

    Index funds

    In the index funds, ICICI Prudential MF leads with the highest index fund AUM of Rs. 38,784 crore.

    HDFC MF follows closely with an AUM of Rs. 38,088 crore in index funds. UTI MF secures the third position with assets of Rs. 36,731 crore.

    SBI MF and Aditya Birla Sun Life MF occupy the next two spots with index AUM of Rs. 30,036 crore and Rs. 21,409 crore, respectively.

    Other fund houses with significant AUM in index funds include Bandhan MF, Motilal Oswal MF, Nippon India MF, Edelweiss MF, and Kotak MF.

    SBI MF dominates the ETF space with a total ETF AUM (including commodity ETFs) of Rs. 3.35 lakh crore.

    Nippon India MF and UTI MF secure the second and third positions with total ETF AUM of Rs. 1.52 lakh crore and Rs. 1.13 lakh crore, respectively.

    ICICI Prudential MF and Edelweiss MF hold the next two spots with total ETF AUM of Rs. 84,284 crore and Rs. 58,703 crore, respectively.

    In the commodity ETFs, which includes silver and gold ETFs, Nippon India MF leads with an AUM of Rs. 20,444 crore.

    ICICI Prudential MF and HDFC MF follow Nippon India MF with commodity ETF AUM of Rs. 9,751 crore and Rs. 6,928 crore, respectively. Rounding off the top five are SBI MF with Rs. 6435 crore, and Kotak MF with Rs. 5951 crore.

    In the overseas fund of funds category, Edelweiss MF leads with an AUM of Rs. 4,734 crore, followed by Kotak MF with Rs. 4,175 crore and Franklin Templeton with Rs. 3,844 crore.

    This is followed by DSP MF with Rs. 3140, and Navi MF with Rs. 2045 crore.
