Car dealers may offer more, cheaper covers

    Source: Mint Sep 19, 2017

Some months back, Mint Money published a story on why one shouldn’t settle for a car insurance policy that the car dealer packages with a car purchase. We advised shopping around for a cheaper policy instead of settling for this convenience. You can read it here.

The good news is that from now on, your car dealer may actually be offering better options. As per the guidelines on motor insurance service providers, which were issued on 31 August by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai), motor dealers can now work for one or more insurers either directly or through insurance intermediaries.

That means car dealers were selling the policies without any license till now. And getting a commissions of upto 50% of the premiums.Where was IRDAI when all this was going on? Everything under the shadow of IRDAI. Now for insurance agents there are about 50 regulations including commission cap of not more than 15%. Now IRDAI wants dealers to become POSPs. They are trying to legalise illegal people. I do not understand why car dealers and car manufacturers be allowed to sell insurance policies without any license. I am saying this because IRDAI knows that these things were going on and still did not do anything about it so they just allowed illegal trade. IRDAI should be held responsible and punished for this.
