    Insurance firm told to pay compensation

    Claim rejected on the grounds that holder’s illness was due to binge drinking

    The Ernakulam Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the New India Assurance Company to pay a compensation of ₹50,000 to a mediclaim policy holder for rejecting his claim for medical expenses on the grounds that his illness was caused by binge drinking.

    The forum also directed the company to process his claim and pay him the admissible amount under the policy in a month.
