It is critical that money flows to the mutual funds: Fitch Ratings

The combination of valuation issues in mutual funds combined with outflows is an extremely challenging combination for funds and can lead to funds suspending redemptions, says Alastair Sewell, Senior Director, Fitch Ratings.

Why do you believe that the Rs 50,000 crore liquidity facility provided by RBI will be ineffective in supporting the mutual fund industry?

The RBI facility is relatively small compared with the total size of the Indian mutual fund sector. In the first instance, there is a gap between the size of the facility and the overall size of the market although it is important to say that not all funds will experience the same issues that we saw with the Franklin funds.
