    The active schemes in the ELSS or Equity Linked Savings Scheme category have offered an average return of 4.34% in 2022. The two popular benchmarks - NIFTY 500 - TRI and S&P BSE 500 - TRI - offered 6.70% and 7.23% respectively till date in this year, according to ACE MF data. Simply put, the category has offered lower average returns than its benchmark indices. However, don't rush to write off the category. The toppers in the tax saving mutual fund category offered double-digit returns.
