In conversations about investing, both public and private, gold goes in and out of fashion as its price goes up or down. Depending on the starting and ending points of the time frame you choose, you can show gold to be either good or bad as an investment. However, if you look at a long enough period, only one conclusion is possible. Over long periods, rising gold prices give an illusion that the returns are good. Consider a span of approximately 40 years, from 1981 until the present.
