    That retail investors find debt mutual funds complicated is just one reason why they remain an enigma. Even their benchmarking is a bit of a maze. Although equity fund benchmark indices are well-known (Nifty 100, S&P BSE Sensex, BSE Midcap 150, NIFTY 500, and so on), debt fund benchmarking has been tricky. Non-public disclosures of benchmark indices and their complex construction make understanding debt fund benchmarks — and making a comparison — difficult.
