Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have emerged as strong counterparts to the foreign money over the last two years. Thanks to the robust inflows seen in equity segment of mutual funds and life insurance companies, DIIs' contribution in Indian shareholding is nearly 60 per cent of the foreign investors - a three-fold increase.
According to data compiled from securities depository Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL), the total assets under custody (AUC) of DII, including banks, was Rs 13.16 lakh crore as on September 2016 against FPI's AUC of Rs 22 lakh crore. This change in the composition of investors has taken place in the last two years as DIIs were just 20 per cent the size of FPIs in September, 2014.
