On 9 November, at the stroke of the midnight hour—just as in the Cinderella fairytale—Indians saw their stash of cash reduced to ‘pumpkin and mice’. Princes, the illegitimate ones, became paupers. This has also caused enormous hardship especially among the most vulnerable sections of society who have borne this difficulty with fortitude. More steps are needed to ensure that their sacrifice has not been futile.
