The National Pension System (NPS) was designed with the objective of creating a formal pension system for the large self-employed and unorganised workforce in India. As per the 66th round of the NSSO Survey, over 400 million of India’s workforce are unorganised, without any formal pension coverage. The objective of NPSwas to target this universe in a low-cost pension model with an unbundled architecture of professional fund managers to manage the investments, points of presence (POPs) to provide reach and central record keeping for portability.
