Just like in 2015, equity mutual funds bore the brunt of volatile markets in 2016 as well. With the S&P BSE Sensex ending 1.2% lower than at the start of the year (as on 26 December), diversified equity funds fell by 2% on an average and mid- and small- cap funds fell by about 3% on an average.
