    SEBI recently allowed celebrity endorsement of mutual funds, albeit on an industry level. Fund houses have to take prior approval of the watchdog before featuring advertisements with celebrities. But are celebrity endorsements the right approach to prod investors into buying mutual funds?

    It is unfortunate that SEBI has taken this stand to promote mutual funds. If celebrities are willing to sponsor the MFs without charging their fees they have valid ARN in their names, the move is most laudable. If they charge their fees, whose money is it anyway? On the other hand, SEBI wants to bring in a lot of restrictions about the pay-outs to the IFAs who have been serving the investors all these years without all these gimmicks. They have toiled hard so far to bring the MF Industry to this level without any sponsors. They need to be awarded suitably for their hard work. Celebrities were not in the picture when they ran from door to door of Investors to build the industry to this level.
