Karvy’s new initiative for MF distributors to comply with GST norms

Karvy Computershare has launched web based GST Invoice Management Solution for mutual fund distributors.
    Nishant Patnaik Aug 23, 2017

In an effort to help distributors comply with GST invoice submission norms, Karvy Computershare has launched a web- based workflow for IFAs called ‘GST Invoice Management Workflow Solution’.

This facility will help MF distributors raise and submit GST invoice, verify and e-sign it online. Once submitted, these invoices will be available for both IFAs and AMCs to complete their GST return filing. In addition, these invoices will be available for any future reference and download as well.

Karvy has also facilitated digital signature certificate to distributors. In fact, the company  tied up with one of the service providers to offer special rates to IFAs. Digital signature enables people to e-sign or authorize their document through Government approved e-signature.

Sharing the rationale behind this initiative, Ravikumar Somasi, General Manager, Karvy Computershare said that the company wants to help distributors comply with GST invoice submission norms. “With the advent of GST, many distributors have to gear up to comply with the norms such as generating and issuing invoice, e-sign and timely submission. Hence, we have developed a platform for IFAs to deal with GST in a simple and time efficient manner,” said Somasi.

He further said that the platform would help distributors reduce paperwork and save time, which they can utilize to grow business.

Also, the solution will help AMCs track status of invoice submission, remind those not submitted, etc., he added.

I wa stold that IFA's whose total turnover is below 20 lakhs need not register for GST. since the AMC's were mandated to deduct GST of IFA's from their commission, unregistered distroibutors need not file the returns, a cumbersome procedure for small investors having no infrastructure to do that work every month!! The Govt has got their share of tax any way by way of reverse charge mechanism The point raised as to why AMC's are deducting GST from IFA's brokerage is not clear at al to us l.If the law is interpreted so, the AMC's should help the iFA's by taking up the matter of disicriminating IFA's in difft cities to the Govt. In service tax, the limit of 10 lakhs was uniform for the whole country. why then the govt has brought in, this differentoial tax system for intra and inter state services!! Is it a simplification or over complicating the existing system without justification. Indeed it is a great problem especially for lady IFA's living on such incomebelow 1-2 lakhs even, to do the compulsory filing evey month including nil statements!!AMc's say it is mandatory to register for GST forALL IFA's.!Many are leaving the profession for lack of clarity onsuch a simple questionable policy in democratic country like ours. many have been taking commission as income for income tax purposes and now with this GST of 18% superimposed further, the total tax burden comes toover 30-405.

Three Cheers to Karvy for initiating "GST Invoice Management Solution" for the benefit of IFA's in particular, who have to handle their GST single handedly. We welcome this initiative, which will be very helpful to us.

Though I have registered with the GST and submitted the GST details to the AMFI. But I am not clear about the whole thing. Some distributors have told me that if my annual brokerage/commission amount is less than 20 lakhs per annum, there is no need to file the return. Is it correct. I do not know the basic facts about the calculation and submission of GST return. The commission which I have received from 23 Jun to 31 Jul 2017, the AMC,s have deducted the GST but no other documents have been received. Kindly advise.

Please share your ARN. For all Karvy Serviced funds you can register on www.karvymfs.com and verify the details. As understood, your GSTIN might not have been updated and hence GST was deducted. For more insights, please write to our distributor care email id distributorcare@karvy.com

Thank you for your initiative in helping Distributors overcome the paperwork of frequent GST returns filing and Invoice generation. Much appreciated. For any distributor not having turnover more than 20 lakhs AND not doing business in any other State other than their home state, why should it be mandatory to apply for GST ? Moreover, those distributors who have not applied for GSTIN are being charged GST @ 18% which is deducted from their brokerage commission. So it appears as though the Government and AMCs are forcing even those distributors to apply for GST number despite being below the threshold limits prescribed. My C.A. categorically tells me not to apply for GST as I will have to mandatorily file returns every month if I do apply for it but then I have to let go of the 18%. It appears application of mind is grossly lacking in this entire GST implementation process. Please clarify and correct me if I am making any wrong assumptions here. How does one overcome this dilemma ?

Another important point I forgot to mention in my above post : I have written to FIFA India : Asutosh Routray on : response@fifaindia.com asking them if they are doing anything to take up this anomaly with either AMFI / SEBI / Ministry of Finance several days ago. However, sadly no response from FIFA so far. Complete silence which seems to indicate either 1. they are not bothered about small distributors or 2. they are not representing the entire IFA Community. Considering this is a very important issue which directly affects the livelihood of thousands of IFAs I thought this was an important enough issue to at the very least elicit a response.

Gst rules are not clear.there is no justification in the rule that a distributor serving AMC outside of his state has to pay gst even if his commission amount is below the fixed range p/a.every small distributor should protest.

Sir,I am registered distributor.Last year I had brokerage income of Rs.97000/ which I took while submitting ITR.
Since I am registered with GST,I have no option but to submit Return and pay taxes.
Let me know please if I pay GST on brokerage ,have I to pay income tax on brokerage ?
What procedure I have to adopt to prepare and submit my GST ,if payable?
how should I have to prepare the return?
Is there any agency to help me free of cost or minimum labour cost?
    please help.

GST and IT are two independent taxes needs to be paid simultaneously. Of course for IT, you have some exemptions available and also slab rate. For GST return filing, you please get in touch with any GSP provider in your area.

    Sir,
is Digital signature is compulsory ? can we download the Invoice from Karvymfs and physically submit the AMC's?

According to law the mutual fund houses are responsible to pay the GST & the taxes . But as they are doing , they are forcing the small IFA's to pay the GST from their commission & overall Amfi , Sebi is supporting ... its contoversial fully whether the small IFA's have to pay the GST ... its harsh on IFA's earning small amount /month.
    Sibaji · 6 years ago
& karvy is also forcing to register the IFA's for GST... what a pathetic condition of us

Some CA says all MF distributors need to obtain GST as they earn commission . As per GST all commission agents have to register. While some CA says only distributors with 20+ lakh turn over need to register. What are the exact provision?

Karvy Computershare Pvt. Ltd. is acting as R & T Agent for Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund House. Whereas some services are performed by F. T. A. M. C. (Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund) itself.

Furthermore, Services which are offered by KARVY to other Mutual Funds Houses Related to Commission Paid to Distributors / GST Invoice Upload / Download / Aadhar Linking with Folio / Commission Dispatch Details etc are not offered with respect to Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund.

What is the reasons & basis for such low number of services to Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund??
