The mutual fund industry has witnessed net inflows of Rs.16,710 crore in equity funds including pure equity funds, balanced, ELSS and equity ETFs in May. It witnessed an increase of 11% from Rs.15000 crore in April. The total equity AUM is now Rs.10 lakh crore declining from Rs.10.60 lakh crore in April due to mark to market loss.

AMFI data shows that pure equity funds received inflows of Rs.10,444 crore in May. The rise in the inflows of equity funds is mostly due to investments by retail investors through SIPs.

Similarly, balanced funds recorded inflows of Rs.2666 crore. Inflows in ELSS and ETFs stood at Rs.906 crore and Rs.2694 crore in May, respectively.

AMFI has started disclosing inflows and assets of arbitrage funds separately from last month. The industry has collected Rs.720 crore through arbitrage funds. Largely corporates/HNIs invest in arbitrage funds for tax purposes. This separate disclosure will help the MF industry get a better picture on net inflows.

Among debt funds, all the categories – income, liquid and gilt funds saw outflow of Rs.20,407 crore, Rs.46,724 crore and Rs.428 crore respectively in May largely because of redemptions from corporates and institutions.

Overall, the industry witnessed outflows to the tune of Rs.50,000 crore while the total AUM for the month of May stood at Rs.22.60 lakh crore.
