The latest SEBI data shows that the industry has added 8.62 lakh new folios in July 2018. Consequently, the total folio count touched 7.55 crore, an increase of 1.2% from June 2018. This folio growth despite volatile markets indicate that the TINA (there is no alternative) effect is at play.
While folio growth was positive in equity funds such as pure equity schemes, ELSS and balanced funds, the ETF category witnessed a decline of 85,989 folios.
Continuing the positive trend, majority of the new folios came in equity funds. In fact, pure equity, ELSS and balanced funds saw an addition of 8.88 lakh folios.
Except gilt, all types of debt funds recorded a growth. Gilt funds saw a dip of 3.5% folios in July. Income and liquid funds saw an increase of 20,683 and 41,454 folios respectively.
Overseas FOFs too saw a 2.3% increase in folio count in July. The category added 2,431 folios taking the total folio count to 1.06 lakh folios.
