The Rs.23 lakh crore mutual fund industry has added 8.22 lakh folios in February 2019, shows the latest SEBI data. A rough calculation indicates that fund houses have added over 41,100 folios daily last month.
Equity funds account for 66% of the total folio growth with an addition of 5.39 lakh retail folios.
Equity funds include pure equity, balanced and ELSS category. Majority of folios were created in equity funds (4.06 lakh) followed by ELSS (1.26 lakh). Overall, the equity category has seen a healthy folio growth of 19% year-on-year due to strong retail participation in mutual funds, said AMFI CEO NS Venkatesh.
Meanwhile, equity ETFs have seen an increase of 17% in folios largely due to the launch of ICICI Prudential Bharat 22 ETF last month. The category added 1.44 lakh folios last month.
Among debt funds, liquid funds have added 44000 folios. The liquid category has added over 5 lakh folios so far this financial year. Since markets are volatile, many advisors have recommended their clients to use STP route through liquid funds to invest in equity funds, said Mumbai RIA Suresh Sadagopan, Ladder 7 Financial Advisories.
Income funds added close to 90,000 folios in February.
Overall, industry’s folio count has reached 8.18 crore folios in February growing by 17% year-on-year, said Venkatesh.
