Maharashtra, Delhi and Goa have the highest MF penetration

Ten states boast a double-digit MF AUM to GDP ratio.
Sridhar Kumar Sahu May 15, 2019

India’s favourite holiday destination, the country’s capital and B-town have one thing in common: They are the leaders in terms of mutual fund penetration.

AMFI’s latest data shows that New Delhi, Goa and Maharashtra occupied the top three positions, respectively in terms of per capita AAUM in March 2019. While the per capita AAUM of New Delhi was Rs.1.30 lakh, the per capita AAUM of Goa and Maharashtra stood at Rs.1.10 lakh and Rs.88,860, respectively.

Per capita AAUM in mutual funds is the total AUM of the state divided by the total number of folios.

In terms of AAUM as a percentage of GDP, these three states topped the chart. While Maharashtra occupied the top spot with 59% AAUM as part of GDP, New Delhi and Goa followed Maharashtra with 50% and 35%, respectively.

Other states such as Haryana, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh have also done well in MF penetration.

So far, these 10 states have an AUM to GDP ratio that touched double-digit. India’s mutual fund AUM to GDP ratio stood at 11% (as of December 2017).

On the other hand, north-eastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland were among the bottom 10 in terms of both AAUM as a percentage of GDP and per capita AAUM.

However, Sikkim is an exception among the north-eastern states. It does not have any AMC branches, yet the state’s AAUM as a percentage of GDP stands at 8% while its per capita AAUM is Rs.18,640.

Sorted in terms of largest to smallest AAUM as % of GDP.
