In July, the MF industry witnessed addition of 10.29 lakh folios, taking the aggregate folio count to 8.48 crore in July from 8.38 crore in June, shows AMFI data.
At over 10 lakh new folios, July witnessed addition of new folios touching a multi-month high and was the highest in FY 2019-20. In June, the industry had witnessed a rise of 5.30 lakh folios. In April and May, the number was around 5.05 lakh folios.
The increase in folios shows an even rosier picture for the MF industry, given the fact that it came in a month when the equity markets tanked. The BSE Sensex declined around 5% in July.
Commenting on this month’s data, N S Venkatesh, CEO, AMFI said, "Despite difficult month and volatile market conditions, the overall sentiment towards debt, equity and hybrid mutual fund schemes has been positive. This conveys signs of maturity on the part of retail investors and is reflective of continued investor trust in the Indian MF Industry."
Equity schemes
A sharp increase in growth/equity schemes drove the sharp increase in MF industry’s folios. With 1.56 lakh new folios in July, large cap funds saw the highest addition among all equity schemes and its aggregate folio count touched 90.22 lakh folios.

However, not all the pure equity schemes saw a rise in aggregate folio counts. Dividend yield fund and value fund/contra fund categories continued to register a decline in folios. These categories have also witnessed a decline in June.
