MF industry adds nearly 5 lakh folios in August

The increase in folios was largely due to large cap and multi cap funds.
Sridhar Kumar Sahu Sep 10, 2019

In August, the MF industry witnessed addition of 4.81 lakh folios, taking the total folio count to 8.53 crore from 8.48 crore in July, shows AMFI data.

With 4.81 lakh new folios, August saw the least increase in number of folios this fiscal. So far in FY 19-20, the MF industry has added around 5.05 lakh folios in April, 5.05 lakh folios in May, 5.30 lakh folios in June and 10.29 lakh folios in July.

The addition of folios was largely driven by open-ended equity funds. With 1.23 lakh new folios in August, large cap funds saw the highest addition among all equity schemes with its total folio count touching 92 lakh folios. The next in the list was multi cap funds that added 87,896 folios to reach 87 lakh folios.

Another notable category of equity funds was ELSS. This category added 61,931 folios in August, as against 72,923 new folios in July. At the end of August, the total number of folios in this category stood at 1.17 crore folios.

    Hybrid funds

For hybrid schemes, it was a mixed bag. Dynamic asset allocation/balanced advantage and arbitrage funds saw addition of 18,917 and 10,084 folios respectively. However, categories such as conservative hybrid fund, balanced hybrid fund/aggressive hybrid fund and equity savings fund witnessed a decline in their number of folios.

    Debt funds

Most debt fund categories witnessed an increase in August. With over 34,000 new folios, liquid funds witnessed highest number of folio addition in August. The total folio of the category went up to 16.42 lakh.

Next in the list was corporate bond funds. This category added 24,650 folios in August. At the end of August, the total number of folios in this category stood at 2.50 lakh folios, as against 2.26 lakh folios in July.

Experts feel corporate bond funds have become attractive because of the rate cuts by RBI. The central bank has reduced repo rate by 110 bps so far in 2019 and it may deliver more rate cuts in near-term due to the slowdown in Indian economy.
