In September, the MF industry saw an addition of 3.45 lakh folios, taking the total folio count to 8.56 crore from 8.53 crore in August, shows recently released AMFI data.
The addition of folios was largely driven by open-ended equity schemes such as multi cap funds and large cap funds. In the debt fund space, liquid funds also saw considerable folio additions in September.
Equity funds
With 87,649 new folios in September, multi cap funds saw the highest addition in folios among all schemes. The total folio count crossed 87 lakh folios in the category. Next on the list was large cap funds that added close to 69,000 folios to cross 92 lakh folios. The other category that saw considerable addition of new folios among equity funds was ELSS. The tax saving MF category added over 44,000 folios, taking the aggregate folio count to 1.18 crore folios.
However, not all equity fund categories saw an increase in their folio count. While value fund/contra fund category witnessed a decline of 24,230 folios, sectoral/thematic funds saw a decline of 11,722 folios.
Debt funds
Most debt funds witnessed an increase in September. With over 54,000 new folios, liquid funds witnessed the third highest number of folio additions among all categories. The total folio count of this category went up to 16.97 lakh.
Next in the list was corporate bond funds. This category added 23,790 folios in September, taking the total number of folios in this category to 2.74 lakh folios. The number stood at 2.50 lakh folios in August.
Meanwhile, investors continued to exit credit risk funds. This category’s folio count declined by over 8,000 to 5.27 lakh folios in September.
Hybrid funds
In case of hybrid schemes, four categories saw a decline in folio count while two categories witnessed an increase. Dynamic asset allocation/balanced advantage category and arbitrage funds saw addition of 7,349 and 8,251 folios, respectively. However, categories such as conservative hybrid fund, balanced hybrid fund/aggressive hybrid fund, multi asset allocation fund and equity savings fund witnessed a decline in their number of folios.
With 3.45 lakh new folios, September saw the least increase in number of folios this fiscal. So far in FY 19-20, the MF industry has added around 5.05 lakh folios in April, 5.05 lakh folios in May, 5.30 lakh folios in June, 10.29 lakh folios in July and 4.81 lakh folios in August.
