I have completed bulk of my education courtesy scholarships given by kind souls, Nilesh Shah

A peek into the life of Nilesh Shah, MD and CEO, Kotak MF and Chairman of AMFI beyond business.
    Vidyut Deshpande Dec 13, 2019

How do you manage to spare time for your family and yourself on weekdays?

We try to have family breakfast together whenever possible. Finding time for family on the weekdays is tough but whatever time is available, we try to spend together as a family. In some sense, it is not the quantity of time but quality of time, which bonds the family.

What is your routine on weekends?

Few weekends I have to work either in travel or local engagements. But largely, we watch movie, go for a dinner and meet friends and extended family over the weekend to recharge for the next week.

How many breaks do you take in a year?

There is one big break due to the mandatory leave policy of Kotak MF. We also take 2 or 3 short breaks in a year for recharging ourselves and spending quality time together.

Where do you prefer to go in India or outside and why? What is your ideal vacation like?

My ideal vacation is one where I could be with nature or with history. We have taken vacations in India as well as abroad.

What are your major interests and passions?

I am an avid reader. I also enjoy watching movies or TV shows.

Which is your favourite cuisine and the dish that you enjoy the most? Which is your favourite restaurant?

Gujaratis are well known for their food. People eat food to live, we Gujarati live to eat food. My favourite food is Khichdi. There is no favourite restaurant. I like all kinds of food as long as it is vegetarian. I used to like street food and sweet but now I have to control the urge to eat such things.

Which is your favourite drink or cocktail? Which is the bar that you often visit?

My favourite drink is Kala Khatta or Nimbu Pani. Unfortunately, most bars will not serve them!

Tell us about any cause/NGO that is close to your heart and your involvement in it

I am fortunate to be on the advisory board of Parivaar. It is involved in providing residential education to underprivileged kids in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. I have completed bulk of my education courtesy the free scholarships given by kind souls. I can never forget or repay their debt. I try to contribute as much as possible on educating kids, as I believe an educated kid can improve entire family’s condition.
