MF equity inflows rise amid fear of economic slowdown

In December, equity schemes witnessed a sharp uptick in inflows after three consecutive months of decline.

Year 2019 ended on an encouraging note for the MF industry. Recent AMFI data shows that AUM of the MF industry grew 16% in 2019 to Rs 26.54 lakh crore despite fear of economic slowdown.

Moreover, most equity funds categories witnessed a sharp uptick in net inflows after three consecutive months of decline. The total equity net inflows grew by 243% to nearly Rs.4,500 crore from Rs.1,310 crore in November.

Barring large cap and mid cap category, net inflows in all other equity funds categories saw an increase in December. Focussed funds witnessed the highest rise in net inflows of over Rs.1,350 crore in December. Other categories such as large & mid cap funds, small cap funds and value funds/contra funds also witnessed healthy net inflows in December.

Data available on SIP also remained encouraging. Monthly SIP flows rose to a record Rs. 8,518 crore in December from Rs. 8,273 crore in November. Total SIP AUM rose to an all-time high of Rs.3.17 lakh crore.

In a telephonic press conference, NS Venkatesh, CEO, AMFI said, “Despite challenging domestic economic scenario and global trade issues and conflicts, retail Investors continue to repose trust in mutual funds as reflected in the continued flows through SIPs.”

The ETF category also witnessed a sharp uptick in December. The other ETFs category witnessed an inflow of Rs 12,939 crore in December largely due to inflows in Bharat Bond ETF.

Meanwhile, debt funds witnessed an outflow in December, driven by outflows from overnight funds and liquid funds. This happens every quarter-end as corporates redeem their investment from overnight and liquid funds.

However, categories like banking and PSU funds continue to receive net inflows due to its exposure to high quality paper. Vishal Kapoor, CEO, IDFC AMC said, “In the fixed income asset class, we saw a continued preference for high quality short-end categories like banking and PSU debt funds and short durations funds. It is encouraging to see average AUM trending higher despite anticipated quarter-end outflows in the overnight and liquid fund categories.”

Debt funds witnessed a net outflow of Rs 78,426 crore in December against Rs 51,427 crore inflow in November. Liquid funds saw a net outflow of Rs 71,158 crore while overnight funds witnessed an outflow of Rs 8,868 crore in December.
