In the last five years, the count of top distributors has surged over 50% to go past 1,500. During this period, the gross commission earnings have risen 22% and the AUM has gone up by a massive 47%, shows an analysis of AMFI's commission data.
According to SEBI, top distributors are those who meet any of these four criteria:
- Having presence in at least 20 locations
- Managing AUM of at least Rs. 100 crore
- Receiving gross commission of at least Rs.1 crore
- Receiving gross commission of Rs.50 lakh from a single fund house
Most of the growth is a result of a strong equity rally in FY2022. The rally did not just boost the AUM but also helped MFDs bring over 1 crore new investors to the mutual fund bandwagon.
In fact, the number of top MFDs jumped 40% in FY2022 alone. The financial year saw commissions rising 55% and AUM surging 33%. The top MFD numbers and their commissions and AUM were almost similar during the FY2018-FY2021 period.
