In a message to investors on the occasion of World Investor Week (WIW), SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch has urged investors to carry out financial planning and choose financial products that are aligned with their financial goals.

Madhabi said, “Investors also need to be careful and do adequate due diligence before investing. They should not invest on the basis of market rumors and should deal only with SEBI registered intermediaries. They should carry out their financial planning and choose financial products aligned with their financial goals. Some of the fundamental principles such as regular saving and investing in a well-diversified portfolio should always be kept in mind.”

Madhabi further cautioned investors that they need not share their personal and financial information without proper verification.

Madhabi further said that India is celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark the completion of 75 years of independence with great enthusiasm. “Over these years, the Indian securities market has transformed in many ways and assisted the economic growth through capital formation. The markets have witnessed growth, in terms of number of daily transactions, number of new demat and trading accounts, increased inflows in products like mutual funds etc. In this scenario, it has become essential to facilitate even greater investor awareness and Investor protection,” said the SEBI Chairperson.

The message has come as a part of celebration of WIW celebrated between October 10 and October 16. WIW is an initiative of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) that is celebrated worldwide by investors, intermediaries and regulators.

Investor awareness is not SEBI's job but it is to protect investors so rather than becoming distributor and disclose portfolio they should be pulling up the industry if and when they do anything wrong. In fact they should see to it and formulate rules so that AMCs can't do anything wrong. This is the basic duty of the regulator and not disclosure. They should disclose their salaries and the work that they do and come out with clear cut guidelines on what is their role. First they should disclose everything about them and then do other disclosures.
