    MF industry sees decline in MF foot soldiers

    The number of people who distribute mutual funds or MF foot soldiers which includes ARNs and EUINs declined by 16% to reach 2.15 lakh in Sept 2022.

    AMFI data shows that the total number of ARNs and EUINs or the total number of people who distribute mutual funds declined by 16% in one year i.e. from 2.57 lakh in Sept 2021 to 2.15 lakh in Sept 2022. 

    Overall, there are 1.24 lakh ARN holders and 91,000 EUINs in the MF industry.

    The category-wise breakup of MF foot soldiers reveals that barring individual ARNs/EUINs, all other categories – banks, NDs, senior citizens and new cadre saw a decline in ARN/EUIN count.

    The MF industry saw 7% increase in individual ARN category. Currently, there are 1.10 lakh individual ARN holders.

    The EUIN count of the industry also witnessed a declining trend over the last one year.

     

    T30 VS B30

    AMFI data shows that 49% of the individual distributors hail from B30 cities as on September 2022. Of the 1.11 lakh registered individual distributors, 54000 are from B30 cities while the remaining 57000 or 51% distributors are from T30 cities.

    Overall, across all distributor category, B30 account for 48% of the total ARN holders and 43% of the EUIN holders.

    MFDs are and will slowly vanish as this business is becoming unremunerative. banks and corporate distributors will drive away individuals , consolidate, then demand higher commission. SEBI will be a silent spectator as big boys lobby will silence them!!

    It is true that MF distribution becomes less and less attractive as the time passes. Also distributors when they leave the business they can sell their current AUM to others at attractive price. This can be done legally. Otherwise AMCs will take investors from such distributors and many distributors are unaware of this fact.
