    Women investors hold Rs.7.54 lakh crore of MF assets as on December 2022, shows AMFI data. Of this, regular plans account for Rs. 6.13 lakh crore or 81% of the total AUM of women investors.

    Meanwhile, direct plans account for the balance Rs. 1.42 lakh crore or 19%. These numbers hint that women investors prefer distributors over going direct.

    The data also reveals that the total women investor count as on December 2022 was 74.49 lakh, of which 27.50 lakh investors joined the MF industry since December 2019.

    While the investor base increased by 29% as on December 2021, it increased by 17% in the following year. The slowdown in addition is largely due to volatile markets, explained AMFI in a press meet.

    Location-wise women investor count

    As on December 2022, 56% of women investors are from T30 cities. However, the proportion of AUM of women investors in T30 cities was even higher at 59% for 2020 and 2019.

    Age-wise women investor count

    As on December 2022, 38% of women investors are in the age group of over 45 years, followed by 27% in the 25-35 age group. Women in the 36-45 age group formed 23% of the total investor base.

    * As on December 2022

    Though only 4% of women investors are from the 18-24 age group, they depicted an increasing trend since December 2019. This age group comprises the student community and women who have just started working. The upward trend indicates that the investor awareness programs of AMFI and AMCs are bearing fruits and the Mutual Fund Sahi Hai campaign has garnered the attention of the younger community as well, said AMFI.

    While this may convey that the women investors are increasing, How do we infer that they actually are decision makers
