AMFI state-wise penetration of mutual funds shows that New Delhi, Goa and Maharashtra are the top three states/UTs as on April 2023. They respectively report Rs.1.91 lakh, Rs.1.54 lakh and Rs.1.41 lakh average AUM per capita.
Average AUM per capita is simply average AUM per folio and is calculated by dividing total average AUM by the total number of folios.
The next three states/UTs are Haryana, Karnataka and Gujarat with average AUM per folio of over Rs.40,000.
Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the other states and UTs in list of top 10 with an average AUM per folio of over Rs.20,000.
In terms of average AUM as a percentage of GDP (i.e. total assets of the state divided by its GDP), the top ten list is somewhat the same.
With 61%, Maharashtra takes the lead here. While New Delhi (48%), Goa (29%) and Haryana (18%) are the next top three, Karnataka (17%) and Gujarat (17%) jointly hold the fifth spot.
West Bengal (16%), Jharkhand (13%), Uttar Pradesh (11%) and Tamil Nadu (10%) have the next highest average AUM % of GDP. Notably, there is yet another tie at the tenth position between Punjab (9%) and Meghalaya (9%).
