Close to 1.30 lakh new investors joined the MF industry in June 2023 as per latest AMFI data. The investor count increased from 3.82 crore as on May 2023 to 3.83 crore as on June 2023. This comprises 3.80 crore unique PAN and close to 4 lakh unique PEKRN (PAN Exempt Investor Category).

Moreover, the investors kept the SIP momentum going as the monthly SIP flows stood at Rs 14,734 crore in June 2023. Interestingly, this is the second straight month where the contribution exceeded Rs 14,000 crore in the current fiscal.
Distributors played a significant role here as they contributed 76% or Rs 11,246 crore to these monthly flows. The contribution of direct plans was far behind at 24% or Rs 3,488 crore.
In terms of new registrations, investors registered 27.78 lakh SIP accounts in June 2023. However, a total of 15.26 lakh accounts matured/discounted in the said period. These factors took the total count of live SIP accounts to 6.65 crore.
A break-up of accounts shows that close to 84% of the SIPs are in equity funds. While hybrid and index have the next highest share, they account for a modest 6% and 3% respectively.

Overall, the SIP AUM stood at Rs 7.94 lakh crore which is close to 18% of the total industry AUM.
Here are other important highlights of June 2023.
Registration of 17.56 lakh folios
With 17.56 lakh monthly registrations, the folio count increased from 14.74 crore to 14.91 crore. A bifurcation by geographies shows that 8.34 crore or 56% of folios are from T-30 cities. The remaining 6.57 folios or 44% are from B-30 cities.
Growth in average AUM by Rs 1.87 lakh crore
The overall industry assets grew by 4%, month-on-month. As on June 30, 2023 the average AUM inched towards the Rs.45 lakh crore mark and stood at Rs 44.82 lakh crore.
In terms of AUM, the industry assets registered a 3% monthly growth and the assets stood at Rs. 44.39 lakh crore. Of this, T-30 cities form Rs 36.42 lakh crore or 82% and B-30 cities constitute the remaining Rs 7.97 lakh crore or 18%.
Slight increase in the average AUM per folio
While the average AUM per folio improved, the monthly rise was marginal.
In T-30 cities, the retail average AUM per folio increased from Rs 2.30 lakh to Rs 2.36 lakh. It also went up in B-30 cities from Rs 0.98 lakh to Rs 1.01 lakh. Further, the overall average AUM per folio of retail investors from both T-30 and B-30 cities improved from Rs 1.72 lakh to Rs 1.76 lakh.
Likewise, the average AUM per folio for the industry as a whole (i.e. retail as well as corporate) was Rs 2.98 lakh as against Rs 2.93 lakh in May 2023.
Rise in distributor count by 3,454
The MF industry welcomed 3,454 distributors, which largely included corporate employees and individual registrations.
