Equity AUM jumps around 2.5x in the last 3 years

Total assets in equity mutual funds across categories increased around 2.5x time in the last three years. These assets increased from Rs 7.68 lakh crore as on September 2020 to Rs 19.08 lakh crore as on September 2023.

A category-wise analysis shows that the flexi cap fund category registered the largest AUM growth of Rs 2.91 lakh crore. This is because the flexi cap fund category did not exist on September 2020 and was first introduced in November 2020.

Otherwise, mid cap, sectorial/thematic and small cap fund categories report the highest jump in absolute terms. The AUM in these categories went up by Rs 1.55 lakh crore, Rs 1.54 lakh crore and Rs 1.45 lakh crore, respectively. This can be attributed to the market run-up as well as the inflows received.

Next, the large cap category reports the fifth-highest growth of Rs 1.22 lakh crore.

The only category to report a dip in AUM is multi cap where the assets declined by Rs 52,289 crore. The fall here may be owing to the rationalization of multi cap funds introduced in September 2020.

Flexi cap - The mark-to-market analysis is not possible here as the fund category was launched in November 2020 and the story covers data as on September 2020 i.e. prior its launch.

Mid cap - The AUM in this category increased by 173% as against the 134% rise in the NIFTY Midcap 150 index.

Sectoral/thematic - Given the existence of multiple individual sector indices, the mark-to-market analysis is not possible here.

Small cap - The AUM in this category went up by 271% largely due to the market run up of 145% as seen in NIFTY Smallcap 250 index.

Large cap - The 72% rise in NIFTY 100 i.e. the market rally in this segment largely contributed to the 83% AUM increase here.
