An analysis of AUM data done by Cafemutual shows that the individual investors account for 91% of the total equity AUM as on March 2024. Individual investors include both HNIs and retail investors. Such a contribution was 88% in March 2019.

Of the total equity AUM of Rs.23.50 lakh crore in March 2024, Rs.21.45 lakh crore has come from individual investors.

Of the total Rs.21.45 lakh crore of individual assets, 42% of the assets has come from HNIs who contributed AUM of Rs.9 lakh crore whereas 58% of the assets has come from retail investors with AUM of Rs.12.43 lakh crore in March 2024.

Of the total equity AUM of Rs.9 lakh crore in March 2019, Rs.7.80 lakh crore has come from individual investors. The share of HNIs is 40% or Rs.3.15 lakh crore and retail investors is 60% or Rs.4.66 lakh crore.

Goa MFD Dr. Celso Fernandes of Nave Marg Financial Consultant believes that many individual investors have gained knowledge about mutual funds. “Thanks to awareness campaign, the share of individual investors in equity has increased in 5 years. Within individual investors, retail investors have the highest AUM as retail investors are willing to take risks and mostly opt for SIPs in equity funds to achieve life goals.”

George Thomas, Fund Manager, Equity, Quantum MF believes that individual investors feel that many individual investors believe that investing in mutual funds is less risky than investing in direct stocks. Individual investors can use MFs to diversify their investments.

“Within individual investors, retail investors hold a larger AUM because they tend to follow market trends and are comfortable with taking on higher risks for profits. HNIs prefer more conservative investment approaches, prioritizing stability over the potential for high returns”, he added.
