Television star Gurmeet Choudhary who is popularly known for playing Lord Ram in Anand Sagar’s Ramayan talks to Cafemutual about his early days, what he did with his first pay check and more.
Were you always interesting in acting?
Yes, I was always keen to become an actor. In fact, I came to Mumbai to act in movies and happened to meet the late Yash Chopra. He advised me to start with TV because of the medium’s reach and mass appeal. He told me that once you win the hearts of audiences through television, film roles will automatically come to you. And that’s what happened. I’m grateful to Yash Chopra.
Tell us about you early days. How did you land the role of Lord Ram in Ramayan?
I was in a live in relationship with my wife Debina when I came to Mumbai. Debina had got an offer for acting in a South project. Our common friend was doing a 3D serial called Mayavi, which was aired on Jaya TV. I was offered the role of villain in this show. The lead actor of the show had shot a five minute show reel in which I was featured for few seconds. The actor was showing the reel to Anand Sagar where he got a glimpse of me. That’s how I got this role.
Your dad was in the army. Did he want you too to join the army?
Yes, he wanted me to join the army. But I was keen on acting. Since my dad was a great fan of Shashi Kapoor he used to call me Shashi Kapoor. Finally, my dad allowed me to pursue my dream.
Was it difficult to essay the role of lord Ram in Ramayan?
Yes, it was difficult to essay this role. I had to learn Ram’s body language and the role required me to be mature as we wanted to portray Ram as a warrior. My wife Debina Bonnerjee played the role of Sita in Ramayan.
What did you do with your first pay check?
I had done a short film when I came to Mumbai. I was paid Rs. 500 for this role. We built a small temple at my place with it. My parents also chipped in to build the temple.
Was the transition from acting in TV to big screen tough?
Yes, it was a challenge because once you become a big star in television, the expectations of audiences are very high.
Which are your forthcoming films?
I’m doing two more films under the Vishesh Films banner which is promoted by Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt. I have also got couple of scripts on which I have yet to decide.
Your family had no background in films. Is it difficult for outsiders to make it big in Bollywood?
Those who have their parents backing or have good connections land roles easily. However, they can’t sustain if they don’t have talent. Thus, it is a challenge for all actors to make it big in Bollywood irrespective of their background. Only talent and hard work helps you achieve success.
Your first investment
We bought a house in Goregaon.
How did you manage your finances when you were a teenager? Are you a saver or spender?
My dad was is in Army so I was not paid big pocket money. I used to buy sweets or chocolates with my pocket money. All the expenses were taken care by my parents. I believe in saving first.
Unlike salaried individuals, actors do not have a regular source of income. How do you manage your finances?
Fortunately for me, there has not been a long waiting time to bag roles. I got three TV roles quickly which became hit. People appreciated my work. We always made sure that we invested our savings in mutual funds, shares and property. In fact, we benefitted a lot from investing in mutual funds and shares. I was paid well for my projects so I was able to save for uncertainties.
A role which you aspire for
I am good at dance. I’m a black belt in Karate and love action. I would like to do an action film.
Who is your favorite action start in Bollywood?
It has to be Akshay Kumar. He has got the right physique and prefers to perform stunts on his own.
What is your advice to aspiring actors on acting and managing money?
Sometimes, actors don’t take television so seriously. But when I got my first break in TV I took it very seriously and gave my 100% to it. You have to have passion for what you do. On money, I would say that you should always secure yourself first and then invest in luxury.
